Application:

One of the main use of QUAT-87 is for the treatment of fungus-infected surfaces before repainting with fungicidal paints. For all normal purposes, a 0.2% solution in water is adequate, although for cases of severe infection up to 1.0% may be desirable. It has no adverse effect on the rate of drying, adhesion or durability of paint films applied over it.

QUAT-87 is effective at 0.3% concentration on normal plaster concrete or brickwork. By treating such surfaces the spread of the fungal growth from infected to sound timbers is prevented. The product is also an effective preservative for starch and protein-based adhesives.

The Actual Concentration necessary is a function of the extent of algae growth, its age & vitality, temperature etc. The care should be taken while using this compound that it should not come in contact with anionic surface-active agents.

In dry grinding of pigments intended for water dispersion, surface active agents are often used. The main purpose in this application is to improve the degree of dispersion. For that reason Supersol Special is often used. Pigments are often coated with an Oleophilic layer (SUPERSOL SPECIAL) in order to make them more readily dispersible in the vehicle in which they are to be used.

The grindling of dry pigments into the oily vehicle is one of the most important step in the manufacture of coating chemicals. The physical chemistry of this process has been intensively studied from both the practical and theoretical point of view & SUPERSOL SPECIAL has been found to be of greater use here.

SUPER SPECIAL is a dark brown coloured pasty substance insoluble in water but soluble in most of the solvents and oil media. However,in acidic water it forms a dispersion showing cationic characterstic.

Unisperse 731 is a new solution form of a highly effective dispersing agent for pigments in aqueous systems. Good dispersion, of course, is necessary in emulsion paint to get good hiding, flow and leveling properties.

Outstanding Properties:

Unisperse 731 is a highly active, light-colored dispersing agent for pigments in aqueous systems. Used in small quantities,(0.25 to 0.5%) it gives excellent dispersions. Stability towards heat is excellent, it is very effective in the pH range of 9.0 to 9.5.

Solubility:

Unisperse 731 is supplied at 25% solids in water. Normally, it is convenient to reduce it to 10% solids for use in dispersing pigments. At this concentration it is easily mixed into the pigment system for maximum dispersing effect. The 25% solution of Unisperse 731 freezes at approximately -2˚C,but freezing does not harm the dispersing characteristics of the product.

The use of Superset is particularly recommended for heavy pigments such as Red Lead, Barytes Iron oxides, etc., as thse pigments quickly form a hard deposit which often cannot be brought back into suspension.Beacause of its high surface activity,Superset keeps these pigments in suspension. If slight sedimentation takes place sediments can be stirred back into suspension without any difficulty.

Method of Application:

Due to its liquid form, the incorporation of Superset is very easy. Actually Superset can be added to the paints at any stage of manufacturing. Addition of Superset at the time of grinding is more effective.

Quantities to be used:

  • The quantities required depend on the nature of the pigments and on the type of binders used. It is well known that light weight pigments require less of the antisettling agent than heavy pigments.
  • In the same way, if binders are used, which, due to the size of their molecules, hinder the sedimentation of pigments to a great extent, less Superset is required. The right quantity can only be determined by experiments.
  • Overdosage should be avoided. Overdosage might cause some side effects like disturbance in flow or delay in drying etc.
  • We recommend an initial quantity of about 0.1% to 0.25% and if the required effect is not obtained, the quantity should be gradually increased.
  • For Red Lead in linseed oil 0.7-1.0% of Superset-P is recommended.
  • Iron Oxide Paints: Require an average of 0.5% of superset while certain grades require upto 1%.
  • Due to the great variety of compounds used in modern coatings, it is practically impossible to give exact figures or to predict the behavior of Superset in every formulation after a few tests, the experts will find without difficulty the exact percentage necessary for obtaining the best results.
  • Another important advantage of Superset is its antiskinning nature.
  • Superset-P is very stable if kept in closed containers. If exposed to freezing temperatures slight sedimentation may take place. Storage at room temperature will re-dissolve the sedimentation.
